Krav Maga Training
What to Wear
To begin with comfortable loose clothing such as tracksuit bottoms, T-shirt and trainers is required. As this is a self-defence system, you will not be required to train barefoot - as it is unlikely you will barefoot in the street! After a while you may wish to wear your own everyday clothing such as jeans. This will enable you to practise the techniques that you have learned in the clothes that you would normally wear. Should you encounter any difficulty in performing the techniques, then the training hall is the place to find out. Techniques will be adapted to suit the clothing if required. That said, no difficulties have been encountered so far.
Equipment
You are not expected to provide any specialist equipment except for a groin guard. This is an essential item for both men and women. You can buy these at the Saints Gym, a good sports shop, or online at
www.kmnw.co.uk. Useful items, although not compulsory are forearm guards and shin pads. All pads, focus mitts etc. are provided.
The Class
Warm-ups are very light and short. There is no need to warm up before practising Krav Maga, the warm up serves simply to prevent any injury in training. The bulk of the class is spent learning the actual techniques. A typical class will include some bag work, some unarmed defences, defences against a knife, stick or gun, followed by defences against multiple attackers. There is no set syllabus, but a wide variety of techniques are covered. Classes differ every week and you are welcome to ask for techniques against specific problems.
Other Training
In addition to training in normal clothes, during the winter months, use is made of the dark! The lights will be switched off to simulate night time attacks. Sometimes, you will be asked to walk through the car park, across the road and into the gym. Several 'attackers' will be placed throughout the route for you to react against. This is a very good indicator of how you might react under stress.
Techniques will also be taught sitting down (fixed chairs e.g.bus) and movable chairs (e.g.pub) and also on the ground to simulate those situations where you are not standing up.
